What happens to a photo the camera stored sideways?
Your browser applies the orientation tag while decoding, so the picture is upright before this tool turns anything, and 90 degrees here means 90 degrees from the way the photo is meant to be seen rather than from the raw sensor rows. The result names the tag it found and says whether it changed the size the drawing worked from.
Do I lose part of the picture when I turn it by an odd angle?
Only if you ask to. A quarter or half turn always grows the frame to fit. For any other angle there is an option to grow the canvas so nothing is cut off; leave that off and the original frame is kept, which slices away the corners that fall outside it.
