Frequently Asked Questions
Is the picture re-compressed?
Yes - that is what does the cleaning. The decoded pixels are drawn on a canvas and encoded again, so the output is built from the picture rather than edited and nothing the old header said is carried across. A JPG output is a fresh lossy compression of the same image; a PNG is re-encoded without loss.
How do I know the metadata is really gone?
The finished file is read back with the same header parser this site's metadata viewer uses, and the page reports how many removable tags there were before and how many there are after. If the original carried a GPS position and the result still does, the page tells you not to share it as clean.
