MD5 Generator

MD5 is still what legacy systems, cache keys and download manifests ask for. This computes it in the browser and states plainly that it is not suitable for security.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which algorithms run natively?
SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 use the browser SubtleCrypto API. MD5 is computed by a local implementation because browsers do not expose it.
Can I use these hashes to protect passwords?
No. A plain hash is not a password storage mechanism — MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for signatures, and fast hashes are brute-forced quickly. Use bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 in your application.
Why does SHA-256 sometimes not work?
SubtleCrypto is only available in a secure context, meaning HTTPS or localhost. Over plain HTTP the browser hides it and the tool says so instead of returning a fake digest.
